Pilot Hole Size Chart for Wood Screws: Gauge, Metric and the Clamp Trick

Split boards and snapped screws both come from the same missing hole. Pilot and clearance sizes for #4–#14 and 3–6 mm screws, the root-diameter rule behind the chart, and the two-hole trick that pulls joints tight.

A wood screw fails in two ways, and both trace back to the hole that was never drilled. Near an edge, the screw acts as a wedge and splits the board. In hardwood, the screw meets more resistance than its core can carry and snaps at the shank — usually flush with the surface, where nothing will grip it. A pilot hole prevents both, it takes about four seconds, and the size comes off a chart short enough to tape inside a van door.

The rule behind the chart is one line: the pilot hole matches the screw’s root — the solid core the threads stand on. Drill the root away and the thread has nothing to push against; drill less than the root and the screw is re-cutting solid timber all the way down. Root diameter in hardwood, a step under it in softwood, and the thread keeps every millimetre of its bite.

Most screws sold in India, Pakistan and Southeast Asia are now marked in millimetres rather than gauge. Same logic, same rule:

Drill the pilot the full length the screw will travel, not just a starter dimple — a half-depth pilot moves the split further down the board instead of preventing it. A strip of tape on the bit makes a depth stop that costs nothing.

The clearance hole is what pulls the joint tight

This is the part of the chart most people skip, and it is why so many "tight" joints have a hidden gap in the middle. If the thread grips both boards, the boards are locked exactly as far apart as they were when the thread first bit — the screw cannot pull them together, no matter how hard it is driven. The fix is the last column of the chart:

  • Top board: clearance hole at shank diameter — the screw passes through freely.
  • Bottom board: pilot hole — the thread grips here and only here.
  • Now the head bears on the top board, the thread pulls from the bottom board, and the joint closes like a clamp.

Softwood, hardwood, MDF and melamine

  • Softwood (pine, fir): modern sharp-point screws away from edges can go in without a pilot. Within about 25 mm of an end or edge, drill one — end grain splits along the growth rings with almost no warning.
  • Hardwood (oak, teak, sheesham, acacia): always pilot, at root diameter. On screws above 5 mm, a touch of wax on the thread roughly halves driving torque and costs nothing in holding power.
  • MDF: treat like hardwood — it does not dent aside like timber fibres; it bursts along the face. Pilot every screw, and keep 20 mm from edges.
  • Melamine-faced board: the chipping happens as the screw enters. A brad point bit scores the face cleanly before the body arrives; a blunt twist bit walks and flakes the coating.

Driving without chewing the head

A correct pilot also protects the screw head: half the torque means half the cam-out. The other half of that story is using the right recess — most "worn" bits are a Phillips bit in a Pozidriv screw, which strips the recess long before the bit wears. Set the clutch so the driver stalls just as the head seats; the last quarter-turn by hand is faster than extracting a snapped #8 from oak.

For the counter and the container

Pilot drilling is a volume business in disguise: every box of screws a hardware counter sells should pull a brad point set and a 1–13 mm HSS set behind it. The sizes that move match the chart — 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 mm wear out first because they are the pilot sizes for the screws everyone actually buys. Stocking those four as loose singles, not only inside sets, is the difference between selling a replacement bit and selling nothing. Bulk buyers can mix loose-size cartons in the same container as sets — that is exactly the consolidation case we run for distributors.
