Saw Blade Tooth Count Selector

“40 teeth” means nothing on its own. What the cut feels is tooth pitch — the gap between teeth — and the same pitch is 30 teeth on a 7¼" blade and 48 on a 12". Pick the job and the diameter, and this gives you the count, the grind and the hook angle that actually produce the cut.

Why pitch, not count

Each tooth removes a chip whose size depends on the feed, the speed and the distance to the next tooth. Move that distance and you change the chip; keep it and you keep the cut — on any diameter. So every recommendation on this page is a pitch band, converted:

Every cell is the same tooth pitch scaled to the diameter — which is why a 7¼" site blade and a 12" mitre saw blade for the same job have different counts and cut the same way.

Common questions

How many teeth for cutting plywood?+
66–84T on a 250 mm (10") blade, 48–60T on a 7¼" site saw. Plywood chips at the exit face where the glue line meets the veneer; a fine pitch keeps the bite per tooth small enough that the face holds. For melamine-faced board go finer still — 80–100T at 250 mm, with a Hi-ATB grind.
24 tooth vs 40 tooth vs 60 tooth — which saw blade do I need?+
On a 7¼" blade: 24T rips solid timber fast and roughly, 40T is the general-purpose blade that does most site work acceptably, 60T crosscuts cleanly and is what you want for trim and mitres. The count is a tooth-pitch choice, so the same three jobs on a 10" blade are roughly 24–30T, 40T and 60–80T.
What tooth count for cutting aluminium?+
80–100T on a 250 mm blade, 96–120T on 300 mm — but the count is the least important part. It must be a TCG (triple-chip) grind with a negative hook angle of around −5°. A positive-hook wood blade in aluminium self-feeds, grabs the workpiece and throws it; that is the accident this blade design exists to prevent.
What is the hook angle on a saw blade?+
The angle of the tooth face relative to a line through the blade centre. Positive hook (+15° to +20°) leans the tooth forward so it bites and self-feeds — good for ripping on a table saw. Zero or negative hook (0° to −6°) makes the blade cut only as fast as it is pushed, which is what you want on a mitre saw (so it cannot climb toward you) and in aluminium (so it cannot grab).
ATB vs TCG vs FTG — what do the grinds mean?+
FTG (flat top): every tooth is a square chisel — fastest chip clearance, roughest edge, for ripping. ATB (alternate top bevel): teeth are bevelled left, right, left, so they score the fibres before removing them — clean crosscuts. TCG (triple chip): a chamfered tooth roughs the kerf and a flat tooth cleans it — the strong corner survives aluminium, laminate and steel. Hi-ATB is ATB with steep 38–40° bevels for chip-free melamine.
How many teeth for a 7¼ inch circular saw blade?+
18–24T for ripping, 28–30T general purpose, 44–60T for clean crosscuts and 60–72T for laminates — the same pitch rules as a 10" blade, scaled down. Framing blades are sold as 24T because on site the job is ripping and rough crosscutting fast, not finishing.
Why does the blade burn the wood?+
Usually too many teeth for the thickness of the cut: the gullets are too small to clear the chip, it packs, rubs and burns. Thick stock wants a coarser blade and a firmer feed. If a coarse blade still burns, the blade is out of line with the fence, or resin has built up on the plate — clean it before blaming the teeth.
